Operation: Speed Read! (Or, How I'm Trying to Escape the Reading Slump)

Alright, bookworms, let's be real. I've been in a reading slump that's less "gentle slope" and more "sheer cliff face." The numbers don't lie: my reading log looks like a ghost town compared to my towering TBR. And frankly, it's time for a change.

I've had the "slow reader blues" posts, the "it's not a race" mantras, and while those sentiments are valid, a part of me is itching to catch up. To feel that satisfying rush of finishing a book, to dive headfirst into a new world, to finally make a dent in that mountain of unread treasures.

So, I'm declaring it: Operation: Speed Read! (Or, at least, Operation: Read at a Slightly More Brisk Pace).

The Motivation Behind the Madness:

Why the sudden urge to speed up? Well, a few things:

  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): The literary world is buzzing with amazing releases, and I'm tired of feeling like I'm always late to the party.
  • ARC Deadlines: Those Advance Reader Copies aren't going to review themselves! And those deadlines are starting to give me anxiety.
  • The Sheer Joy of Reading: I miss the feeling of being completely immersed in a story, of turning pages late into the night.
  • My TBR is taunting me: I swear I can hear the books whispering "Read me...Read me..."

The Plan of Attack:

I'm not talking about sacrificing comprehension for speed. I want to enjoy the books, just… faster. Here's my strategy:

  • Dedicated Reading Time: I'm scheduling specific blocks of time each day for reading, treating it like a non-negotiable appointment.
  • Minimizing Distractions: Phone on silent, social media off. Creating a dedicated reading space where I can truly focus.
  • Strategic Book Choices: Choosing books that are engaging and fast-paced, at least for a while. I will save the heavier, more complex reads for times when I am not trying to catch up.
  • Audiobooks for On-the-Go Reading: Utilizing audiobooks during commutes, chores, and workouts to maximize reading time.
  • Setting Realistic Goals: Instead of aiming for a book a day (which is unrealistic for me), I'm setting achievable daily page goals.
  • Embracing the Power of the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of focused reading, followed by a short break. It helps me stay focused and prevents burnout.
  • Reviewing and Reflecting Quickly: When finishing an ARC, I will write down my thoughts as soon as possible so I can get my review written and posted.

The Reality Check:

I know this won't be easy. There will be days when I'm tired, distracted, or just not in the mood. But I'm determined to push through.

I also know that this "speed read" phase is temporary. I'm not going to turn reading into a race forever. But for now, I need to kickstart my reading habit and get back on track.
