Drowning in TBRs and ARCs: A Bookworm's Plea

Fellow book lovers, I come to you today with a confession, a lament, a cry for help! I am, quite simply, drowning. Drowning in a sea of unread books, a tidal wave of TBRs, and a veritable monsoon of Advance Reader Copies (ARCs).

Yes, I know, it's a "first world problem," as they say. But for those of us who find joy and solace in the pages of a good book, this overwhelming abundance can feel... well, overwhelming!

Let's break down the chaos, shall we?

The TBR Mountain:

My "To Be Read" list is not a list. It's a sprawling, ever-expanding mountain range. It started innocently enough, a few recommendations from friends, a couple of intriguing titles spotted in bookstores. But then came the book blogs, the Goodreads rabbit holes, the endless stream of "You might also like..." suggestions. Now, it's a beast. A beautiful, tempting beast, but a beast nonetheless.

I've tried organizing it. I've tried prioritizing. I've even tried limiting myself to only adding books I can acquire immediately. But the mountain grows, its peaks piercing the clouds of my reading aspirations.

The ARC Avalanche:

Then there are the ARCs. Oh, the glorious ARCs! The promise of reading a book before it hits shelves, of being part of the early buzz, of feeling like an insider. It's intoxicating. But with great power comes great responsibility. And that responsibility is reading, reviewing, and doing it all within a tight deadline.

Suddenly, my carefully curated reading schedule is thrown into disarray. Deadlines loom, review requests pile up, and I find myself juggling multiple stories at once, desperately trying to keep characters and plot points straight.

The Reader's Guilt:

And then there's the guilt. The guilt of knowing there are amazing stories waiting for me, stories I desperately want to experience, but simply don't have the time for. The guilt of letting those ARCs sit unread, their deadlines ticking away. The guilt of adding more books to the TBR when I haven't even made a dent in the existing pile.

So, what's a bookworm to do?

Honestly, I'm still figuring it out. But here are a few strategies I'm trying:

  • Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize: I'm attempting to be more selective about what I add to my TBR and which ARCs I request.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Instead of aiming to read 10 books a month, I'm focusing on quality over quantity.
  • Embrace the DNF (Did Not Finish): It's okay to put a book down if it's not grabbing me. My time is precious!
  • Schedule Reading Time: Just like any other appointment, I'm blocking out time for reading in my calendar.
  • Celebrate Small Victories: Even finishing one book is a win!
  • Remember Why I Love Reading: At the end of the day, reading is about enjoyment. I need to remind myself of that.

I know I'm not alone in this struggle. So, fellow readers, I ask you:

  • How do you manage your TBR and ARCs?
  • What are your tips for staying organized and avoiding reader guilt?
  • Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of books there are to read?

Let's commiserate, share our strategies, and remind each other that even in the midst of a bookish avalanche, the joy of reading is always worth it.

Happy reading (and surviving)!
