Ditching the Hype: Rediscovering My Reading Joy by Following My Own Path

Lately, I've been doing something revolutionary (for me, at least): I've been reading exactly what I want to read. No pressure, no hype-driven choices, just pure, unadulterated reading joy.

For too long, I found myself caught in the whirlwind of the latest releases, the buzziest books, the titles everyone was talking about. While I enjoy staying up-to-date with the literary world, I realized I was losing sight of my own reading preferences.

The Hype Cycle:

We've all been there. The moment a new book hits the shelves, social media explodes with reviews, recommendations, and endless discussions. It's easy to get swept up in the excitement and feel pressured to read the "it" book, even if it doesn't align with your personal tastes.

But I've learned that chasing the hype can lead to disappointment and burnout. I've read books that were critically acclaimed but didn't resonate with me, and I've missed out on hidden gems that perfectly suited my reading preferences.

The Freedom of Choice:

This month, I decided to break free from the hype cycle and embrace the freedom of choice. I've been diving into books that have been on my personal TBR for ages, regardless of their publication date or current popularity.

And let me tell you, it's been liberating!

Rediscovering My Reading Loves:

By ignoring the latest releases, I've rediscovered my love for:

  • Backlist Treasures: Those hidden gems that have been waiting patiently on my shelves.
  • Genre Exploration: Diving into genres I haven't explored in a while, simply because they pique my interest.
  • Re-Reading Favorites: Revisiting beloved books that bring me comfort and joy.
  • Listening to My Gut: Choosing books based on my own instincts and preferences, rather than external pressure.

The Benefits of Reading What You Want:

  • Increased Enjoyment: Reading books that truly interest you makes the experience more fulfilling.
  • Reduced Reading Slumps: When you're genuinely engaged in a book, you're less likely to fall into a slump.
  • Personal Discovery: You might discover new authors, genres, or themes that you wouldn't have otherwise encountered.
  • Reduced Pressure: Reading becomes a source of relaxation and enjoyment, rather than a chore.

My Advice to Fellow Readers:

Don't be afraid to break free from the hype and follow your own reading path. Explore your personal tastes, rediscover old favorites, and embrace the joy of reading what you truly love.
